A paramount goal of SAH is to track verified green practices of businesses and professionals across the State of Hawaii to produce a meaningful directory for the community.

Such a directory would eliminate unsubstantiated claims of sustainability efforts, often called green washing, that mislead and confuse consumers.  By listing all businesses working toward green practices according to a rating system that recognizes the many possible levels of green efforts, businesses at all stages of green growth will be easily recognized by the community.  This will increase demand for green practices, which will in turn encourage businesses to become more green.

Recognizing the need for a rating system to promote and grow Hawaii’s sustainability sector, many islands have either implemented or are in the process of developing their own green business rating system. In response to this opportunity, SAH has developed a dedicated committee that is focused on collaborating with sustainability organizations in the state of Hawaii to ensure that:

(1) Green business program efforts are streamlined effectively across the state;
(2) Social, cultural, economic and environmental considerations unique to Hawaii are included;
(3) All businesses are aware of and have an entry point into programs regardless of their sector, geography or level of green practices;
(4) The demand for recognized green businesses is maximized across Hawaii.
